To: The U.S. Congress
Trucking interests are lobbying Congress to increase truck size and weights in the multi-year, multi-billion dollar surface transportation bill that will be considered this year. Each year nearly 5,000 people die and more than 100,000 are injured in truck crashes. No progress has been made to significantly reduce truck crash deaths and injuries. The current federal truck weight limit is 80,000 lbs. but special trucking interests want to increase it to 97,000 lbs. or more. Bigger, overweight trucks are more dangerous to motorists and truck drivers, more destructive to our roads and bridges, and more damaging to our environment and health.
We strongly urge Congress to keep the current federal truck size and weight limits and support H.R. 1618 and S. 799, the Safe Highways and Infrastructure Protection Act (SHIPA). These bills are co-sponsored by more than 90 Democratic and Republican Members of Congress and will protect our families and our infrastructure investments.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
